SIGUS - Framework for Digital Inclusion of Persons with Special Needs
- Summary: This project aims to promote the development of computer systems that can be used by persons with special needs. A software framework, integrating machine learning and computer vision tools, will be constructed and will aid to the development of computer-human interfaces based on the interpretation of visual signs, captured through a CCD camera. Some prototypes for eye-gaze and head-movements wheelchair control and sign-language interpretation will be implemented. All the results will be made freely available through the Internet.

INFOPISCI - Development of an Information System for Control and Support
Decision Making in Mato Grosso do Sul Fish Breeding Productive Chain
- Summary: This project intends to attack the fish breeding sector
bottleneck at Mato Grosso do Sul, which is lack of control, management and technical support in cultivated fish production. The rural producer, specially the small and medium
ones, have no tools to help in the decision making process. This information system will
allow them to store data about the production in order to develop models that will
help decision making process and help the follow-up of native fish from Pantanal
and Mid-West region of Brazil.

TATO (REMOTE TOUCH) - Sensory Substitution System as a mobility aid for blind people, using Electrotactile Stimulation and Digital Image Processing.
- Summary: The original system was developed at USP by professor
Mauro C. Pereira during his PhD, as a mobility aid to visually handicapped
people, allowing them to deal with a practical problem in his/her diary life,
the familiarization of an unknown environment. The usual techniques of orientation and mobility
take too much time. The system uses sensory substitution (SS) of vision by
touch, by capturing images in a PC, digitally treating them to detect its
edges and lower its resolution, and then pass it to the user via cutaneous
electrical stimulation on the abdomen. A prototype of the equipment was built,
composed of hardware and software of stimulation, and software to digitally
process the image, and also a flexible electrode matrix. Currently it is under
adjustment and training tests. This equipment also allows experiments on
experimental psychology and experiments of somesthesic systems (touch), being
of great interest for professors at USP (Universidade de Sao Paulo), at the
departments of Psychology and of Physiology at ICB.

DTCOURO - Automatic Detection of Bovine Leather Defects
- Summary: Visual inspection of leather is an important step in bovine leather classification. Defects like scars, open fissures and pin holes, to cite a few, may decrease leather quality, making it inappropriate for certain applications. Besides, in order to stimulate investments on bovine leather care, in the farms and during transportation, it is important to have a reliable and automatized system that could classify the leather and award producers of higher quality leather. This project will research, implement and evaluate some computer vision techniques for automatic leather inspection in three different places: farm, cold storage plant and tannery.
